Long Distance Inspiration No. 5: Cynthia & Patric*
As cliché as this seems, we met in France -at our company’s Paris office.
Since we were colleagues, we spent a great deal of time together and developed a great working relationship…and eventually, a greater friendship. But because we were best friends and colleagues, I couldn’t really express just how much I had come to admire her.
It was a little devastating when she announced over dinner one night that she was going back to headquarters in New York. After some deliberation, I told her how I felt the day after. I figured…we were both mature adults, who saw something special in each other. I believed in the strength of our friendship, even if she did not reciprocate my feelings.
Lucky me, she did. Unlucky us, our relationship began as a long distance one.
Honestly, I don’t know how we survived those three years. Due to conflicting work schedules, we could only visit each other in person twice a year. We spent nearly every available moment together on Skype, and I spend two years on the waiting list just for a transfer to our New York office. At the time, it seemed terribly long and unending, but…here we are today.”
—Patric, on his wedding to Cynthia. June 6, 2012, New York.
